Saturday morning early start to get to London. We drove
first to Bedford to jump on the train and before 11am we were at King's
Cross. Of course the first thing to do was to check the platform
number 9 3/4. I will add pictures later. It's great,
popular place to photo shooting. Then into tube and towards London Eye.
Awfully long queue but Jouni counted that the Eye takes 2000 people in
an hour so no problem. BUT there was a technical problem and they
had to close it down. Time to go to Tate Modern
and lunch. Walking by Thames, lots of activity on the way: living
statues, book fair, cafes, street musicians and people. Real
metropol athmosphere, great!
Tate
Modern is a huge building. We had lunch on the 7th floor where
there was a great view over London. Excellent meal also.
Ant's friend Lesley came to join the company. After lunch we had
a short visit on the 3rd floor gallery to see Mark Rothko's interesting
paintings and on the other end of the building Surrealists' exhibition
called Poetry and Dream. Girls might have got some new ideas for
their work - will be seen...
Over Thames on the Millenium Bridge
which had some problems when openned. After two days it was
closed because of swaying and the bridge got a nickname Wobbly
Bridge. No wobbling now. We passed St Paul's cathedral and
got the tube to Camden Town market. Which turned out to
be Heini's heaven and parent's nightmare. She bought a hat,
cravat, 2 T-shirts and a bag, Tuuli got a dress, T-shirt ("Good
girsl go to heaven, bad girls go to London") and souveniers for
friends. We met Ant's daughter Mary and had a pint. Thanks
for Anne for the hint, at least Heini liked it!
London Eye was now openned and we had half an hour ride on the 135m high wheel. It was raining and the views were not so clear but still you could see all the biggest sights. I felt a bit scared! The whole thing was built only for temporarily use but ended up to be so popular that it's now one of the tourist attractions.
Next to Victoria station and quick supper before going to see musical Wicked. To be continued...
