Manhattan street plan is really easy.  Streets go East to West (or viceversa) numbering starting from South and the North-South are the Avenues numbering starting from West.  What a relief to tourist!  So easy - you always know where you are and where you are going.  This valid in Manhattan except the original city in the South part of the Island.  Streets were smaller and there were more of those, a couple minutes walk to the next street.  Avenues were broader and also further away so that it took maybe 3-4(?) mins to get to the next one.  East and West side are separated on 5th Avenue, East being the more expensive and West of course familiar from West Side Story etc.

6th Avenue towards Central Park.  Carnegie Hall on the right.
